Guess What?

repost from July, 2018

My bff Kerry is always there for me, ready to correct my typos and grammatical errors, especially those dreaded apostrophes.

It’s hard to believe its July already, it’s absolutely true what my Mother use to say to me,

“Don’t wish your life away Sharon, before you know it you are old”

Why does time seem to move at a faster pace the older you get? I don’t know the answer to that question, what I do know is that we must not waste a second of every day.

I often reflect on her wise words, my beautiful Mum died at only 51 years young and now that I have surpassed her age I would like to think about my life with a zest for making the most of every day.

“Live your life every day with purpose, be excited, laugh, don’t waste a second of living your best life”

Okay the last few words I have taken from my muse Oprah, one of my favourite quotes by Oprah is to simply,

“Live your best life

I recommend getting yourself a copy of a beautiful hard cover book titled Live Your Best Life: A Treasury of Wisdom, Wit, Advice, Interviews, and Inspiration from O, The Oprah Magazine.

Speaking of Oprah, I must share my exciting news, Kerry and myself are cruising with Oprah, Gayle and the Oprah Magazine staff in January on Holland America Line’s newest ship the Nieuw Statendam from Fort Lauderdale, Florida cruising the Bahamas.

Oprah Winfrey has been given the title of The Godmother of the Nieuw Statendam.

TheOMag

Oprah Winfrey has been given the title of The Godmother of  Holland America Line’s newest ship the Nieuw Statendam

I promise to fill you in more as we get closer to our departure.

What I can tell you for now is that divine timing was our gift to secure our precious tickets as The Oprah Magazine Girls Getaway Cruise was sold out in less than 24 hours.

Christine Potter Mulhearne who is The Oprah Magazine’s Style Director and blogger of Style me Sassy excitedly announced on her Instagram story that The Oprah Magazine Girls Getaway Cruise sold out in less that 24 hours and that they had broken the Internet.

This blog is dedicated to my bff Kerry Rundell, my real life Gayle King

In other news I am super proud to share with you I have been commissioned this year by The Bali Advertiser, Bali & Beyond Magazine the Jakarta Post  and news.com.au as a contributor for their publications.

My dream has manifested into a reality and I have become a Journalist.

Additionally I have been featured in the Siapa section of the Bali Advertiser, it is vital that we must keep up a conversation about the global catastrophe of domestic violence.

My interview with Bill Dalton highlights my passion for speaking our truth, to advocate for a peaceful world where violence is just a bad memory, we need to tell our stories to rally against any form of violence and hatred.

I will continue to write thought provoking content, my desire is to occupy a world where we can live in harmony, a world where we can live side by side without prejudice, without bigotry, without racism or bias about a person’s sexual orientation.

Thank you for taking the time to read my blogs.

Blessing always

Gunung Agung, Mangku Bon adalah penjaga gerbang kebenaran Universal

Karangasem: 22 Desember, 2017

JANGAN TREK Gunung Agung

Pertama kali saya melihat foto Mangku Bon saya merasa tenang. Saya menulis tentang perasaan saya ketika saya memperbarui blog saya 1 Oktober, 2017.

Dari Kiri: Eka, Made, Manku Bon, Cucu, Saya Sendiri and Kadek

Made: Iya.

MB Darimana asalmu? Bagaimana Anda menemukan saya? Bagaimana anda bertemu Kadek? Bagaimana anda mengatur untuk datang?

Made: Kami terhubung di facebook.

MB: Dimana anda tinggal?

Made:Saya tinggal di Sangeh

MB:Oh baiklah.

Made: Kenapa anda pergi ke sana?

MB: Saya selalu istirahat setengah jalan.

Kadek: Apakah kondisinya sama sekarang seperti sebelum letusan besar tahun 1963.

MB: Tidak.

Made: Kapan proses gunung berapi selesai?

Made: Mengapa Anda mendaki puncak Gunung Agung berkali-kali?

Made:Ketika ledakan terjadi pada tahun 1963, bagaimana Anda tetap aman?

MadeMangkuBon

Made, Mangku Bon

Kadek:  Ketika Anda mendaki Gunung Agung terakhir kali apakah Anda merasakan Gempa Bumi?

Made: Apakah Anda merasa takut di atas?

MB: Tidak, saya merasa bebas. Saya tidak merasa panas. Saya merasa kedinginan.

MB: Iya. Tuhan memakai tanganku untuk melakukan pekerjaan ini. Saya berdoa untuk Gunung Agung dan dunia. Tidak sebaliknya, terkadang orang menjadi bingung.  Tuhan selalu menjaga orang-orang dan memberi pesan. Kita harus mendengarkan. Kita harus melakukan apa yang Tuhan minta. Iya nih. Saya adalah penjaga Gunung Agung. Tuhan akan melindungi saya. (* Mangku Bon mengatakan ini dengan penuh semangat)

Made: Anda memiliki pekerjaan penting.

MangkuBon&SharonKayasa

Bersama Mangku Bon

Kadek tersenyum padaku dan berkata,

 “Sharon, impianmu menjadi kenyataan”

Blessings always,

Sharon

Mount Agung VOLCANO ERUPTION …. The “Big Fella” is a STAR

Our mighty Mount Agung continues to surprise us.

Living on the Island and documenting my feelings has certainly been an interesting exercise.

It’s hard to believe this is my 18th blog since my first live stream on the 24th September, 2017.

I tried to stop writing about “The Big Fella”…. (I wonder when I decided to call him that?), it is impossible though as he has enticed me hook, line and sinker.

Our Holy Gunung Agung is a powerful addictive drug and I am at his merci.

I am flattered that members on facebook groups are also using his nickname I coined affectionately “The Big Fella”.

Some argue that he is not a man, he is a woman.

Some argue that he just a bloody Volcano, why talk about him like he his is human? They may have a point, however I feel as though he is a man, just as the Balinese Hindu Religion believes he is the masculine Holy Mountain and that Mount Batur is a female because she is surrounded by water and is smaller in size.

Our man of the moment has woken us up and I am now sitting in front of the computer frantically searching, scanning, researching and seeking information.

In addition to Vlogging and hobbling beside Made (my toe is still not 100%) on our morning walks to take live footage of Mount Agung.

This week has been intense.

I believe most people here on the Island who have been following the progress closely believed our guy would have fully erupted by now. He has not.

Monday evening after scanning through my twitter feeds I discovered Mount Agung was the leading story on the The New York Times twitter feed.

I was so impressed I took a snapshot and posted it on my Instagram page.

The following morning I was sleuthing online when I discovered the source of the magnificent photograph the New York Times featured.

I also read on Made Nagi’s Instagram feed when a reporter from Reuters contacted him to ask permission to use the photograph.

What an instantaneous world we live in. I was so captivated by Made Nagi’s image which prompted me to write a caption. I felt as though Mount Agung was sending me a message.

Black and white, Hitam dan Putih, Saput Poleng, good and evil, truth and lies. I believe the answer we are looking for is hidden in our Mighty Mount Agung. Which side do you choose?

Black and white is significant in the Balinese Hindu Religion.

If you look around you will notice the black and white check cloth called Saput Poleng draped around temple, statues, trees and worn by people. The spiritual aspect of Saput Poleng signifies good and evil and somewhere in between.

The air we breathe is different now.

When Made admits there is a change in the air then I know it’s serious.

It was confronting looking at a visual of our beautiful Island covered in red when I read an article written by Earth Observatory.

I decided I should wear my mask more frequently, even on a cloudy day some satellites excel in detecting components in the atmosphere that are invisible to human eyes, such as sulfur dioxide (SO2).

I refuse to worry or give into fear, I was a smoker for years. I reckon my lungs can take toxins for a while.

I refuse to be vindicated for speaking the truth about how I feel living through this phenomenon on the most magical place on Earth.

stargazingagung

The most magical photo I have seen of “The Big Fella”… a true Star Photo Credit  Kyle Kesterson

The seismic monitors have been going berserk, inside the Volcano a powerful cocktail of molten rocks, fluids and gases move from deep within the earth to the top.

We have seen spectacular photographs of images showing thick plumes of steam and ash being bleached out. I have been following Dr Janine Krippner who is a Volcanologist on twitter, her fabulous description of what is transpiring on the mountain has been reported worldwide this week.

Yesterday something else emerged, there have been reports of groans and noise coming from within the creator. We have also had reports of the earth moving unlike an Earthquake. A friend posted on facebook,

“OMG Just had a burst rumble from underneath, not like anything I have felt before. Like a pressure cooker lid blowing off”

Approximately 100,000 people have been directed to leave their homes and relocate to evacuation Centers.  Kopernik, Mount Agung Emergency response fund has been set up. Please give generously.

For up to date official warnings, please go to MAGMA Indonesia.

Bali’s only airport was closed. Then it was open. I cannot report on the status of the airport or flights, everything is at our fingertips now. The answer to these questions can be found out 24 hours a day online.

The only thing we cannot find is when our “Big Fella” the star on the worldwide stage will do his final performance.

As one of my friends reminded me, in 1963 Mount Agung took 12 months to fully erupt…. is this a mini series or an epic movie?

Stay tuned.

Blessings always

Mount Agung VOLCANO ERUPTION 25 November, 2017…. CAUTION RED ALERT LEVEL 4

After such a crazy week breaking a toe and having my teeth filed… yes I am serious, I had my teeth filed by a Balinese High Priest known as a Sulinggeh, in an epic 30 hour Metatah ceremony.

Here is a sneak peak before we talk about the “Big Fella” and his grandstanding in the last 24 hours.

We awake early every morning (it’s impossible to have a lazy Sunday when you live in a Balinese family compound).

I was scanning social media when I noticed a post by a friend on facebook, the caption read, “6am Bali time…. It’s pumping”.

The photographs and video footage was astonishing.

MountAgungkadekPutraYasa

The images online were astonishing. Mount Agung Volcano Eruption, 25 November, 2017.  Photo credit via Facebook I Kadek Putra Yasa

I jumped out of bed trying to ignore my aching toe, I yelled out to Made to wait for me before he took off to walk our three dogs (did I mention we have another rescue mutt?). I needed to check out Mount Agung in reality.

I couldn’t quite believe it when I saw a huge plume of ash billowing high into the sky and spreading.

I was hobbling behind Made while I was trying to record on Instagram in addition to scanning updates online to reassure myself I wasn’t hallucinating.

Today has been sensational, almost surreal. It’s hard to believe after all this time our “Big Fella” is finally erupting.  Follow MAGMA Indonesia for official updates.

Most people want to know two things.

  1. Is Bali safe to visit?  I can confirm that according to a tweet by Mr Sutopo that Bali is Save… oops Safe outside the exclusion zone.  Sutopo2.jpg2 .Is the airport is open?

I can confirm that Bali’s only airport which is called the Ngurah Rai in Denpasar is open, however you will need to check with your airline as there is a tremendous amount of confusion about flight schedules.

I am not going to write about the technical details of our “Big Fella”, he is putting on a spectacular show.

Mount Agung is the star, the experts are busy analyzing data, observing and waiting.

I will sign off with a tweet by Mr Sutopo before I upload this blog.

Bali – Mount Agung VOLCANO ALERT ….Now on Level 3 _Galungan dan Kuningan.

Updated 16.00 29 October at 16.00
URGENT UPDATE: 29 October 2017 The level has decreased Status of Mt Agung Bali from Level IV (Caution) to Level III (ALERT) On 29 October 2017 at 16.00 WITA. Communities around Mt Agung and climbers / visitors / tourists not to move, not climbing and not camping inside the Mt Agung crater area and in all areas within a 6 km radius of the top crater of G. Agung and climbers / visitors / travelers are expected to remain calm while maintaining vigilance, not to be bothered by issues about Mount Agung’s unclear eruption. Source: PVMBG.

Life goes on here in Bali, Made is convinced Mount Agung will go to sleep.

Maybe he is correct, however we still need to go about our lives mindful of the fact that the “Big Fella” could very well erupt.

This coming Wednesday, November 1, we celebrate Galungan dan Kuningan.

Galungan is the day that our ancestors come to visit. We give elaborate offerings, pray and welcome them.

Our ancestors stay for 10 days and then we celebrate Kuningan.

Kuningan is the day we farewell our ancestors, the process will continue in 210 days time. This is a continual ritual.

Galungan dan Kuningan represents the victory of dharma (good) over adharma (evil).

It really is a beautiful time to be in Bali.

The Penjors lining the Streets are exquisite. I love the story Made tells. He believes the Penjors represent humility, the way he explained it to me is that the top of the Penjor represents the top the mountain.

Once you reach the top of the mountain you must remember to look back down to where you came from.

Panjors

Beautiful Penjors line the Streets in Villages all over the Island of Bali, Indonesia

I love this story.

I feel respect for our ancient Balinese Hindu traditions, particularly at this time with our Holy Mount Agung still active and making his presence known.

I believe the uncertainty about the eruption has lead to soul searching for many of us here on the Island.

It’s a gorgeous day here at Tri Sandhya Villa.

I feel truly blessed to have an incredible life here in Paradise, the weather is perfect we look forward to welcoming you soon.

This is breaking news about Mount Agung, as soon as I hear more information I will let you know.

Blessings always,

Sharon x

Bali – Mount Agung VOLCANO ALERT ….Repost _ do you believe in magic?

We seem to be at a stalemate here on our paradise Island of Bali.  As of October 21, 2017 we are still on Level 4 High Alert.

More than 180,000 plus people have been evacuated from their homes here in Bali, life goes on, please help by donating to Kopernik.

My heart aches for these people who have been away from their homes, temples and animals for some weeks now.

For updates check MAGMA Indonesia’s website.

I reported on my previous blog information that my husband Made translated from the Bali Post on October 10, 2017.

The official number of evacuees as quoted from Bali’s Governor Made Pastika totals 185,865 people, from 54,788 families.

When I awoke this morning, I turned on my television and tuned into ABC 24 to try and catch up on some news from my other home in Australia.

It seems these days astonishing events are unfolding almost hourly.  Did I hear right?  Was the former Prime Minister of Australia talking about volcanoes and offerings to the Gods?

I missed the report so I quickly jumped online, to my horror Tony Abbott was quoted as saying,

“Primitive people once killed goats to appease the volcano gods, we are more sophisticated now but are still sacrificing our industries and our living standards to the climate gods to little more effect”

This quote shocked me.

I felt sick.

I became weak, then I rushed to my computer to express my emotion.

Only yesterday I was invited to a complicated ceremony in a very special temple. For now I would prefer not to go into the details of where, when, why and how come.

I am writing a book about my extraordinary life and my commitment to the Balinese Hindu Religon.  Let’s just say it’s complicated.

What I will say is that we had a very special guest, who is a Buddha Pendeta Priest from Karangasem.  Our special guest performed a series of rituals.

I was in awe of this priest, I had never seen a priest wear yellow.  I asked Made if he had ever seen a priest dressed in such an elaborate way.  Made was also surprised and intrigued.

Our special guest was powerful.  I was hooked into a daze of fantasy.

I witnessed an incredible secret ritual.

I knew yesterday that without a shadow of a doubt that these rituals (amongst other reasons) was to give blessings to our Holy Mount Agung.

In my heart of hearts I believe these types of ceremonies are happening all over Bali, after all we are the Island of the Gods.

Now I didn’t see any sacrificing of animals yesterday, however I am not saying it didn’t happen prior to the opening ceremony.

I would like to sign off today’s blog with something my dear Mum would say to me,

“Respect all people, religions and places. We are all different, if there is something we don’t understand we must not make judgement”.

Blessings always

Bali – Mount Agung VOLCANO ALERT…. Blog 14_ Welcome to Bali

Hi all,

It’s hard to believe I have written 13 blogs (although I have skipped that illusive number in my sequence) since the confrontation of a potential eruption of Mount Agung, who I have affectionately named the “Big Fella“.

I can’t stop now, I am obsessed, his magnificence is awe inspiring. Check out the Instagram story I recorded before the drama began earlier this year.

My last blog caused a little bit of controversy on a facebook forum, apparently the title of my blog was too sensational.

I truly apologise if I caused any harm.

My intention is to report what I have researched from the authorities and to write entertaining scribe which includes stories from my Balinese family.

In addition I am uploading VLOG’s, which I have been recording on Instagram.

The last week has been a busy time in our Village, with preparations for an epic pomp and ceremony that happens only once in a decade.

I promise to write about it at some point.

A friendly reminder to all that we are still on level 4 High Altert for the possible eruption of Mount Agung.  Daily updates can be found on MAGMA Indonesia’s website.

We have more than 180,000 plus people who have been evacuated from their homes, please give generously the price of a cup of coffee can make a big difference.

I would like to sign off my blog with a warm and fuzzy story from our magical Island of the Gods.

Blessings always,

Sharon x

Bali – Mount Agung VOLCANO ALERT…. Blog 12_ the land was moving like a dolphin, a story from an evacuee

We seem to be at a stalemate here on our paradise Island of Bali.

More than 180,000 plus people have been evacuated from their homes here in Bali, life goes on.

My heart aches for these people who have been away from their homes, temples and animals for some weeks now.

Bali is open for business as usual.

The airports are open, the hotels and restaurants welcome your business with warmth and sincerity you will only find in Bali.

Below is the latest histogram for the period 24 hours prior to the reading at midnight October 15, 2017.

Histogram 15 Oct

Histogram , 24 hour update until midnight 15 October 2017.  Sincere gratitude to Rachel Bergsma for updating this graph daily.

I have nothing to report other than a story from Made, we have relatives who are evacuees.  See our silly instagram story for true news from Bali today.

*This was a conversation that took place in the hospital.  I am assuming this happened before the family were evacuated.  Please don’t ask any further questions, this is a story from my husband.  Our cousin is very sick from a stroke and cannot speak or move.

Blessings always,

Sharon xx
