A Conversation with Oprah – O, The Oprah Magazine, Nieuw Statendam Caribbean Jan 30 – Feb 2 2019

It takes time to digest the gigantic experience after sailing with Oprah Winfrey in the Caribbean on Holland America Line majestic Pinnacle-Class ship the Nieuw Statendam.

SharonK

Half Moon Cay – Bahamas

I needed to let the excitement of the extraordinary event settle, I needed to absorb the phenomenal experience before attempting to articulate the enormity of what transpired during our three days at sea with our warrior tribe.

Every day Kerry and myself would come back to our stateroom, on our beds we had been left thoughtful gifts, like the metallic journal that I made notes in for this blog.

Every day we would come back to our stateroom after absorbing a non-stop fusion of energetic positivity, sailing in Paradise with 2,700 women (mostly) who are champions in every professional field imaginable, and included leaders of the literary world.

Every day we would read our postcards sent with love, an inspirational quote, a powerful reinforcement that we were in fact, sailing with Oprah Winfrey (I later found out that Oprah was sleeping on our deck)OprahQuote.jpg

The three day cruise was jam packed full of inspirational events, it was our choice to participate in as much as we wanted to.

We were sailing together as one tribe, the love and camaraderie was infectious.

We met our new friends Darlene and Chrisandra, cousins from Rochester in New York on the first day of the cruise in the dining room, after attending the ships emergency drill.

Later that evening at the exact same moment the door in the opposite cabin to ours opened, we were staying on deck number seven, which happens to be my lucky number.

Almost colliding we were facing Darlene and Chrisandra, the four of us laughing simultaneously paved the way for a wonderful alliance.

I asked the ladies why they had booked the Girls Getaway Cruise with Oprah and O, The Oprah Magazine, they explained that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Strangely enough we kept running into Darlene and Chrisandra without making plans, the Law Of Attraction was in full swing on our cruise and as Oprah says,

“There is no such thing as a coincidence”

Just like my meeting with Lucy Kaylin who is the Editor in Chief of O, The Oprah Magazine when we first boarded the ship.

I was thrilled to meet Lucy after communicating via email about my work initiating the world changing family violence legislation.

I was delighted that Lucy recognized me and introduced me to her husband Kimball. I prayed that I would meet with Lucy again, away from the crowds just like I had in our initial meeting.

My manifestation became a reality, just after midnight on the last night of the cruise I met with Lucy in a quiet space.

We were both delighted to meet again, we hugged and had a brief but important conversation about my work.

I will hold our conversations close to my heart, I am grateful to have been blessed with such an opportunity.

There was an absence of haters on board the Nieuw Statendam,  Oprah’s powerful energy would extinguish any negative force in a heartbeat.

It was time to party, after all it was Oprah’s 65th birthday the day before we sailed. The B.B King’s Blues Club in the Queen’s Lounge was the place to unite.

I was obsessed with the music and couldn’t stop dancing, the dance floor was a magnetic force of superwomen.

Two floors moving in a rhythmic wave of purposeful knowing, we shared the secret. We had secured a golden ticket on Gods floating vessel of Goddesses.

I couldn’t get enough as the band sang “Ladies Night”.

I wasn’t alone soaking up the electric atmosphere. The trumpet players were pumped, they danced as they blew their hearts out. The band created joyful music as the vocalist belted out,

Oh, yes, it’s Ladies’ Night
And the feeling’s right
Oh, yes, it’s Ladies’ Night
Oh, what a night (oh, what a night)

Gayle King moved effortlessly in front of me onto the dance floor, the crowd became excited but respectful as she danced and weaved her way through the mass of dancers.

Gayle displayed real appreciation of all the guests in attendance.

At times both Kerry and myself felt the crowds were overwhelming and would retreat to a quiet part of the ship.

We both enjoyed the library, surrounded by inspirational books, reclining into luxurious lounge chairs overlooking the Ocean as we sailed on calm seas.

I became lost in a quandary of space and time when I looked up to the high-resolution world screen and noticed a perfect photograph of beautiful Sanur in Bali, Indonesia.

The exact corner of the beach my husband and myself retreat to on our magical Island home.

Sanur.jpg

The highlight of the cruise was being present at the world stage for,

“A Conversation with Oprah”

Kerry and myself glowed with Aussie pride when Gayle sat with Oprah and chatted to the audience about the two ladies she had met on the beach, who had traveled from Australia to attend the Girls Getaway Cruise.

Gayle King and Oprah Winfrey – World Stage, Nieuw Statendam

Being in the same room as Oprah Winfrey was an experience far beyond anything I could have envisaged.

Oprah was engaging, her realness and authenticity was confronting.

The audience sat in silence as the world stage wrapped around us, cocooned by a two story 270-degree LED screen in high definition. A warm blanket of enormous images engulfed the audience.

The images were of Sofia, the character Oprah played in the 1985 American film The Color Purple, directed by Steven Speilberg.

The story Oprah was telling us was like music in my ears.

Oprah told us how she is the master of manifestation, and how she manifested the role of Sofia.

The process of manifestation happened only after surrendering and letting go completely.

I know a lot about being obsessive, it was necessary that I pay very good attention to Oprah’s story.

Oprah told us about her obsession with Alice Walker’s book called The Color Purple. When Oprah heard that there was going to be a movie come out she started praying,

“God, please let me be in this movie”.

Although she had never been in a movie and didn’t know anything about acting in movies, but she kept praying and became fixated on the thought of playing the role of Sofia in The Color Purple.

The story continues as she told us about Quincy Jones being in Chicago because he was the producer of the Thriller album and there was a lawsuit being filed against Michael Jackson.

Somebody said that Billie Jean was their lover, and that he stole it, or whatever. So Quincy Jones was there to prove that Billie Jean was not their lover.

He had taken the red eye and he was getting out of the shower when he turned on the television in his hotel room. Oprah told us she was hosting AM Chicago when Quincy Jones saw her and said, “That’s Sofia.”

After auditioning for the role of Sofia in The Color Purple she didn’t hear a word, after two months she took this as a bad sign.

Oprah called Reuben Cannon who was the casting director asking why she hadn’t heard from him.

Reuben advised Oprah that she must not call him, if he had any news he would call her. Reuben hurt her feelings by saying he had auditioned real actresses to play the part of Sofia.

Oprah decided she needed to loose weight and retreated to what she describes as a Fat Farm, or what is now known as a Health Retreat. She needed to talk to God, to ask his help for her to surrender and let go of her obsession with Sofia.

Oprah told us that she was running around the track, crying and praying for God to help her let go because she was getting on peoples nerves. She cried out,

“Please God, help me let it go”

Continuing her pilgrimage around the racetrack she started to sing the song “I Surrender All”. Oprah was singing and crying whilst visualising The Color Purple made with another actress playing the role of Sofia, without feeling sick.

She kept thinking about the sign, the sign of the character who she auditioned with who’s name is Harpo, she kept thinking that surely that was a clear sign that the role was meant for her. After all Harpo is her name spelt backwards.

Oprah told us she kept praying and crying until she reached the point of release.

The instant that she got to the point when she thought she would be okay without playing Sofia, was the exact moment a woman came running onto the track advising her there was a telephone call from Steven Speilberg.

Steven Speilberg wanted to see Oprah in his office the next day, he told her not to loose one pound of weight, she was perfect the way she was to play Sofia.

Oprah told us that The Color Purple changed her life.

“It changed everything about my life because in that moment of prayer and letting go I finally understood the principle of surrender”

Oprah Winfrey

One year later Oprah went on to launch her own television show named The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show stands as the highest rated program of its kind in history.

The Oprah Winfrey Network was launched, Oprah Winfrey became the richest African-American woman of the 20th century.

Oprah’s story of surrender is familiar to me.

I have already surrendered once about my obsession to meet Oprah Winfrey.

I recited a mantra out loud as I removed Oprah’s image from my professional facebook page in June, 2018.

“Oprah I choose to let you go, you are still my muse however I release you from my obsession to meet with you”

48 hours later, Gayle King and Oprah Winfrey were talking on my IPhone urging me to sail with them on the Girls Getaway Cruise.

I took this as a sign and booked immediately (even without Kerry agreeing), the cruise sold out in less than 24 hours.

Maybe the older you get the more you need to surrender? I turn 55 in a few weeks time!

“Once again,  I wholeheartedly let you go Oprah Winfrey”.

I really do mean it….

Footnote:

Oprah Winfrey officially named the ship in a ceremony on board in the ship’s World Stage at the conclusion of the Girls Getaway Cruise on February 2, 2019.

Winfrey was joined by Orlando Ashford, president of Holland America Line; Stein Kruse, Holland America Group and Carnival UK chief executive officer; and Arnold Donald, president and CEO of Carnival Corporation

Winfrey reflected on the Girls’ Getaway cruise that had just concluded, saying:

It’s been an incredible experience to see people from across the world come together with one mind and celebrate themselves, honor themselves and honor each other. Everybody gathered, made friends and connected to people they didn’t know because they felt like they had met themselves on some level. I have never seen anything like it.”

She then officially dedicated the ship as its godmother with the traditional statement,

“I name this ship Nieuw Statendam. May God bless her and all who sail on her.”

A New Day is on the horizon

I am sending you, my readers an abundance of New Years optimism. I know its late, however it’s always a good time to transmit good will.

I am sending an affirmation to all, who will read this scribe, for every year to be superb, take a chance and enjoy your life.

My blogging in the second half of 2017 was all about our active Volcano, Gunung Agung. I felt obliged to update my Community of readers regularly about our “Big Fella”, I became obsessed with the process of the Volcano.

Although I still keep a close eye on our “The Big Fella” I now feel calm, knowing that the activity of the eruption will follow the course of nature.

My interview with Mangku Bon  has left me feeling composed and focused on what is important.  My daily ritual of prayer and meditation continues to keeps me aligned. I believe that faith is a constant reality of truth.

I am joyful, my soul is filled with gratitude every day I wake up on this beautiful planet we all occupy.

It is my intention to inspire my readers, to seek out a positive outlook even when faced with the toughest of challenges.

I am optimistic and excited about the future for our majestic Island of the Gods, I feel blessed to be living in Bali at this time in history.

I was thrilled to be interviewed by news.com.au  about my fascinating meeting with Mangku Bon, additionally the story was featured in the International Business Times.

For now I will resign from my self appointed role, which was updating my blog on the activities of Mount Agung. Check the Official site MAGMA regularly for updates.

What I would like to diarize in this blog, is my enthusiasm and excitement I feel this year.

I envisage a fresh wave of confidence for the future. Reinforced by my creative muse Oprah and her unforgettable speech at the 75th Golden Globes Award Ceremony on January 7, 2018.

A New Day is on the horizon

There are so many reasons why the 75th Golden Globes Award Ceremony was one I will never forget. My admiration for the actress and activists campaign hit close to home, my own involvement in advocating for survivors of domestic abuse has also been phenomenal.

How incredible that A list actresses Susan Sarandon, Meryl Streep and Laura Dern amongst others wore black as a sign of respect for victims and survivors of domestic violence.

The scene was dramatic, the world wide audience was made aware of the Time’s Up Campaign , an initiative which is raising money for the legal defense fund, this fund will provide support to victims of sexual harassment and assault.

The campaign also seeks inclusion, equality and parity for women and marginalized people across all industries.

A powerful moment in the show was when Reese Witherspoon accepted the Golden Globe for Big Little Lies, which won the Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture made for Television.

In her speech Reese gave thanks to the many women who had broken their silence, she reassured the audience by saying,

“Time is up, we hear you, we see you, and we will tell your stories”

Finally Oprah was welcomed to the stage by Reese to accept The Cecil B. DeMille Award, which is an honorary Golden Globe Award bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.

I was in awe, in fact I needed to find her speech on social media to play it over and over again.

Oprah began her speech by talking about herself as a little girl in 1964, sitting on the linoleum floor of her mother’s house in Milwaukee, watching Anne Bancroft present the Oscar for best actor, which was awarded to Sidney Poitier at the 36th Academy Awards. She went on to talk about her Mum being bone-tired from cleaning other people’s houses.

It was incredible, the first page of my memoir starts in 1964 when my 21 year Mother was sitting on the floor with her baby girl. She was in her suburban home in Melbourne watching a small black & white television as The Beatles arrived to a frenzy of hysterical fans.

Could Oprah have read my book?

I don’t know the answer to that question yet, however what I know for sure is this. It doesn’t matter if Oprah has read my book, I now know that my heroine thinks like me. I am still dumbstruck by the similarities.

The rest of her speech was truly phenomenal, my friend Lisa Zimmer summed up my feelings perfectly when she wrote on her Instagram Post,

 Power~ Strength~ Truth~  by Lisa Zimmer

Watching Oprah receive the Cecil B. DeMille award last night showed such poignancy to our nation, and to those watching our country.  We saw a woman with steadfast integrity, awareness and intelligence stake claim to the power of standing in truth.
We watched as a country that currently struggles with truth and security, validate the importance of standing in integrity.
We saw that power and strength does not lie within a specific gender, but within truth.
We witnessed leadership in a woman
who silently, has mentored millions, simply by showing up in authenticity.
She has showed us that shattering illusions created to repress aren’t just possible, but applauded, because by speaking truth, we create positive change.
We saw a leader last night, a leader for all of humanity. God bless you Oprah for all you have created in our world.

I will sign off my first blog for the year and reiterate wise words from Oprah, the beautiful soul who continues to guide me in my creative accomplishments,

“What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have,  I want all the girls watching here now to know that a new day is on the horizon”

Blessings always,

Mount Agung VOLCANO ERUPTION …. The “Big Fella” is a STAR

Our mighty Mount Agung continues to surprise us.

Living on the Island and documenting my feelings has certainly been an interesting exercise.

It’s hard to believe this is my 18th blog since my first live stream on the 24th September, 2017.

I tried to stop writing about “The Big Fella”…. (I wonder when I decided to call him that?), it is impossible though as he has enticed me hook, line and sinker.

Our Holy Gunung Agung is a powerful addictive drug and I am at his merci.

I am flattered that members on facebook groups are also using his nickname I coined affectionately “The Big Fella”.

Some argue that he is not a man, he is a woman.

Some argue that he just a bloody Volcano, why talk about him like he his is human? They may have a point, however I feel as though he is a man, just as the Balinese Hindu Religion believes he is the masculine Holy Mountain and that Mount Batur is a female because she is surrounded by water and is smaller in size.

Our man of the moment has woken us up and I am now sitting in front of the computer frantically searching, scanning, researching and seeking information.

In addition to Vlogging and hobbling beside Made (my toe is still not 100%) on our morning walks to take live footage of Mount Agung.

This week has been intense.

I believe most people here on the Island who have been following the progress closely believed our guy would have fully erupted by now. He has not.

Monday evening after scanning through my twitter feeds I discovered Mount Agung was the leading story on the The New York Times twitter feed.

I was so impressed I took a snapshot and posted it on my Instagram page.

The following morning I was sleuthing online when I discovered the source of the magnificent photograph the New York Times featured.

I also read on Made Nagi’s Instagram feed when a reporter from Reuters contacted him to ask permission to use the photograph.

What an instantaneous world we live in. I was so captivated by Made Nagi’s image which prompted me to write a caption. I felt as though Mount Agung was sending me a message.

Black and white, Hitam dan Putih, Saput Poleng, good and evil, truth and lies. I believe the answer we are looking for is hidden in our Mighty Mount Agung. Which side do you choose?

Black and white is significant in the Balinese Hindu Religion.

If you look around you will notice the black and white check cloth called Saput Poleng draped around temple, statues, trees and worn by people. The spiritual aspect of Saput Poleng signifies good and evil and somewhere in between.

The air we breathe is different now.

When Made admits there is a change in the air then I know it’s serious.

It was confronting looking at a visual of our beautiful Island covered in red when I read an article written by Earth Observatory.

I decided I should wear my mask more frequently, even on a cloudy day some satellites excel in detecting components in the atmosphere that are invisible to human eyes, such as sulfur dioxide (SO2).

I refuse to worry or give into fear, I was a smoker for years. I reckon my lungs can take toxins for a while.

I refuse to be vindicated for speaking the truth about how I feel living through this phenomenon on the most magical place on Earth.

The most magical photo I have seen of “The Big Fella”… a true Star Photo Credit  Kyle Kesterson

The seismic monitors have been going berserk, inside the Volcano a powerful cocktail of molten rocks, fluids and gases move from deep within the earth to the top.

We have seen spectacular photographs of images showing thick plumes of steam and ash being bleached out. I have been following Dr Janine Krippner who is a Volcanologist on twitter, her fabulous description of what is transpiring on the mountain has been reported worldwide this week.

Yesterday something else emerged, there have been reports of groans and noise coming from within the creator. We have also had reports of the earth moving unlike an Earthquake. A friend posted on facebook,

“OMG Just had a burst rumble from underneath, not like anything I have felt before. Like a pressure cooker lid blowing off”

Approximately 100,000 people have been directed to leave their homes and relocate to evacuation Centers.  Kopernik, Mount Agung Emergency response fund has been set up. Please give generously.

For up to date official warnings, please go to MAGMA Indonesia.

Bali’s only airport was closed. Then it was open. I cannot report on the status of the airport or flights, everything is at our fingertips now. The answer to these questions can be found out 24 hours a day online.

The only thing we cannot find is when our “Big Fella” the star on the worldwide stage will do his final performance.

As one of my friends reminded me, in 1963 Mount Agung took 12 months to fully erupt…. is this a mini series or an epic movie?

Stay tuned.

Blessings always

Bali – Mount Agung VOLCANO ALERT level 3 _aerobics and jiggling chandeliers

Most mornings I crawl out of my bed at around 5.30am and walk our dogs with Made.

Some mornings I give it a miss, I justify this to myself believing that last night’s vigorous aerobic work out was enough exercise.

I was sipping my coffee, flicking through the international news on my television when the shaking started.

The quake shook my tiny house, the chandelier jiggled, the windows rattled. I was thinking,

“Wow this quake is big, maybe I should go outside?”

By the time I crawled out of bed and walked onto my balcony it had stopped.

I looked at my family who were attending to their normal activities making offerings.

They looked at me and said,

“Linuh … (pronounced linoo) the Balinese word for Earthquake”.

By the time Made returned I had scanned social media to ascertain what had just happened.

PGR 3 Bali:
An earthquake occurred with the following parameters:
Strength 5.0 SR
Date 09-Nov-17
Earthquake Time 04:54:18 WIB – Jakarta Time
Latitude 8.26 LS
Longitude 115.57 ET
Depth 10 Km
Locations:
Bali Region, Indonesia

30 km northeast of BANGLI-BALI
40 km northeast of GIANYAR-BALI
60 km northeast of DENPASAR-BALI
999 km southeast JAKARTA-INDONESIA
Evaluation:
This earthquake did not trigger a tsunami

I’m not about to go into technical language as I am not an expert.

In an article written by Tempo.com, according to PVMBG Devy Kamil Syahbanam who is the Head of Mega Monitoring Division of Eastern Volcano, Devy advices that,

“ Gunung Agung has not been completed yet, there is still a lot of energy,”

Please follow the link to MAGMA Indonesia who are doing a fabulous job keeping us updated daily.

Mount Agung is still on Level 3 Alert, today’s movement may result in a new wave of sensationalism about what will happen next, or maybe not?

The “Big Fella” is consistent in keeping us bewildered.

I look back on my initial blogs and laugh. Life is exciting, I have embraced the Balinese philosophy,

Kehendak alam (the will of nature)

It’s really silly, however the Doris Day song Que Sera Sera comes to mind,

Que sera, sera

Whatever will be, will be

The future’s not ours to see

Que sera, sera

What will be, will be

Life is still the same here in Bali.

I am writing, advertising our gorgeous Villa and enjoying the quiet time here in Paradise.

I am also spending a considerable amount of my time advocating through social media.

I am bewildered about the horrendous situation that is unfolding on Manus Island where 600 men are starving because of a political nightmare, in regards to their human right to  seek asylum as described in a article written by the New York Times.

I have been following the progress of the refugees for years, admiring the humanitarian work by the not for profit organisation, ASRC, Asylum Seeker Resource Centre .

I feel an overwhelming sadness at the unfathomable circumstances that can be allowed to transpire in today’s age.
I wholeheartedly agree with Russell Crowe,

Made is busy preparing for Kuningan on Saturday in addition to hosting two guests from Western Australia who have booked a spiritual tour tomorrow.

It really is a fabulous time to be here in Bali, there is always something extraordinary happening.
