Bali – Mount Agung VOLCANO ALERT…. Blog 6

The weather here on the Island of the Gods has been idyllic the last few days, it’s hard to believe our majestic giant is causing so much attention.

I had a chuckle this morning when a local posted a status on his facebook,

This is why you shouldn’t believe anything u read on the fucked up internet!

I’m currently looking at the volcano and Jack shit has happened it’s still the sleeping monster it has always been #fuckfakenews!

I totally get this, my friend from Torquay sent me a message yesterday advising me that Mount Agung will erupt within a few hours, according to some reports in Australia.

Some reports though have been great, like the one written by Matt Davies from news.com.au titled,

Indonesia ready to divert tourists as Bali volcano rumbles

Matt quoted a line from my blog and linked me into his report,

“Hands up who else on the Island feels anxious”

Needless to say I have taken my husband’s carefree advice and relaxed.

“Kehendak alam, what ever will be will be”

I feel extremely proud of the community here on the Island and the outstanding coordination from all levels of government, as detailed in today’s Jakarta Post,

“In an impressive show of solidarity, communities and individuals have banded together to provide assistance for evacuees who have had to escape the rumbling Mount Agung in Bali”

We decided to spend our wedding anniversary today at our favourite small Warung beachside in Sanur on a perfect day in Paradise.

In between eating, swimming and sun baking I was researching information about Volcanos and Mount Agung.  I had with me an old fashioned reference, a book.

made&sharon

Perfect today at Sanur Beach

Bali Sekala & Niskala Volume II by Fred B. Eiseman, JR, is a comprehensive resource on all things Bali. I didn’t have to search far, as the first Chapter is titled,

Island of Bali, Volcanoes, Monsoons, and Tides

Eiseman details fascinating data about the history of our Big Fella’s eruptions, including the benefits to the land after an eruption.

With my knew found interest in finding out more about Volcanoes, Monsoons, and Tides, I asked Froggy who has been a Surfer and Ocean man in Sunur for 30 years.

froggy

Froggy started surfing when he was 10 years old.

The short answer from Froggy was NO. There has been no change in the tides what’s so ever over the last week.

Everyone wants so know if and when the Big Fella will roar?

You can furiously ask google for the answer to that question, however our Paradise Island has it’s own schedule,

Only our Balinese Hindu Gods know that answer to that question.

Blessings in love and solidarity,

Sharon x

Bali – Mount Agung VOLCANO ALERT…. Blog 5

Okay, so it seems eminent our mighty Mount Agung will erupt soon…

I scrapped my blog from this morning, the national press have covered everything, there is no need for me to repeat the latest news on my blog.

This is my second attempt today to update my blog whilst I have been a passenger in the car.   Made insisted we go for a swim at our favourite beach in Sanur this morning.

I tried to protest and then I looked at my husband and realised it was necessary for both our sanity.

He continues to be his carefree self, although I have won the battle with my volcano ready check list and feel satisfied that I have put the necessary steps in place, to the best of my knowledge and as instructed by an amazing group of people on facebook.

Hands up who else on the Island feels anxious?

I want to send a big shout out to the local expat community. Your wealth of knowledge and comradery has been truly heart warming.

For up to the minute facts please check with local authorities as the best source of information.  MAGMA should be the first point of contact.

These people are angels. Behind the scenes, tapping away at their computers, researching, deleting trolls, taking personal attacks, all in the name of trying to help.

It’s 5pm and we are almost home, I will be truly relieved to settle in for the evening.

I have checked my list of volcano preventative measures and feel pleased, I said to a friend earlier today,

“It’s time, bring it on big fella we are ready”

mtagung

Footnote it’s now 8.18pm and it seems activity is happening as I type.

Blessings to all in solidarity and love

Bali – Mount Agung VOLCANO ALERT…. 4

Today’s blog is probably the hardest to write.

The days are stressful, when will the mighty Mount Agung erupt?

I woke up this morning realizing how lucky I am to be part of a loving, close knit community.

Our Village in Sangeh is located quite some distance from the alleged danger zone.

I say alleged, as the evicted villages are what the Volcanologist’s and scientific experts are calling the safe zone.

Nobody really knows what will happen, according to the last tweet by Magma Indonesia.

In response to the rumors that the Great Volcano will erupt tonight, we from PVMBG can not confirm the truth because the forecast is done using a different approach to what PVMBG does in understanding volcanic activity. PVMBG sees signs of volcanic activity through continuous (24 hours / day) visual and instrumental observation. The latest analysis of PVMBG indicates that volcanic seismic volcanic energy continues to increase and has the potential to erupt. However, both PVMBG and all volcano experts in the world who study scientific activity volcano, not a single one is able to determine when the eruption will occur. thank you Kasbani Head of PVMBG.

In my last post Made spoke about the stories from his mother when Mount Agung erupted in 1963, however it’s not 1963, it’s 2017 and anything is possible.

I desperately want to take my husband’s carefree attitude and go with the flow and see what happens, however, I believe in balance and it certainly doesn’t hurt being prepared.

I woke up this morning in an assertive mood, and although my husband called me paranoid, I sent our niece Eka out in search of high quality surgical face masks and goggles for not only our own family compound but for hers as well.

She counted 23 adults and 7 children.

I am still waiting for her to return to see what she could find.

Apparently there are no more high quality masks left on the Island?

I instructed Eka that it was her mission. She was a warrior. I am positive both Eka and Made think I have finally flipped my lid.

I have the responsibility of my people.

I must be prepared for the worst case scenario.

I must compile a substantial medical kit, ample supplies of fresh water, food and be ready on stand by for what ever happens.

My friend Ayu Conroy, who lives in Canggu with her Australian husband Chris and daughter Alexa also has family on her mind.

Ayu decided to take a road trip home to Singaraja on the other side of Mount Agung and visit a camp in Tejakula Village where approximately 2,000 people have been displaced.

Ayu told me that she felt the press were mainly concentrating on the Karangasem Regency and feels the other side of Mount Agung may be forgotten.

However, when she arrived at the camp she was surprised at the amount of fresh food and resources available. Ayu told me that the supply of food was healthy and plentiful.

Ayu’s tip when visiting the camps is to bring chocolate and lollypops for the kids.

Apparently if you bring supplies in the box you cannot open them and distribute yourself. The supplies could only be distributed by the volunteers

“I wish I had brought 100 lollypops in my handbag, that way I would have made the kids really happy”.

Ayu is concerned that when Mount Agung erupts people may forget about the people in the camps, as the after effect is sure to go on for months.

To lighten the mood with Made and myself obsessing over masks and goggles, I asked Made questions about the religious and cultural significance of Mount Agung.

I was delighted to hear that in the old days, people would climb to the top of Mount Agung and meditate as they could feel the energy.

I asked Made why Mount Agung is a male?

He explained that Mount Agung is bigger than Mount Batur.

Mount Batur is the woman as she is smaller than Mount Agung and is surrounded by a lake.

This makes perfect sense to me.

Made went on to explain more about the significance, the song, Kidung Bali which is the prayer for both Mount Agung and Mount Batur.

Ill sign off  with a pray, as we continue to walk through our days of the unknown here of the magnificent Island of the Gods.

It’s all about the animals…. Apparently snakes and monkeys are descending from Mount Agung.

Made believes the eruption is not too far away as the chickens didn’t wake us up this morning.

Sending prayers, love and solidarity to all residents and visitors, who are now with us on this mystical Island of Bali.

We wait.

The latest news from Bali TV tells us 160 small Earthquake tremors have been active in the past days.

Only time will now inform us what the mighty Mount Agung has in store?

It’s been a long day.

It’s 9.30pm here in our Village, I feel weird, the only word that comes to mind about how I am feeling and the atmosphere in Bali is eerie.

My husband and family members in our Village compound are going about their every day lives with an acceptance.

That’s just what they do… they accept what will be, without what seems like too much worry at all?

Today I have been feeling every emotion, I would say a feeling of anxiety is at the top of my list.

I feel empathy and sadness for the locals from Karangasem, who have been evacuated from their homes, away from their temples and animals and who are now refugees in their own Country.

It seems the number of people are in the vicinity of 10,000 and increasing by the hour.

Volunteers have banded together co-ordinating the delivery of essential supplies and collecting donations.

More information can be found on Kopernick’s website who have set up a fund, MOUNT AGUNG EMERGENCY RESPONSE.

It’s interesting to be an Aussie chick married to a Balinese man right at the moment.

I am in mini breakdown mode, planning, stocking the cupboards, buying masks and everything else I have been reading about that is necessary when facing an impending Volcanic Eruption.

Made is just going along his merry way without a care in the world.

Tonight we decided to take a ride to the rice fields where the local farmer told us this morning where we would see Mount Agung in all his glory if he erupted.

All was quiet, eerie, not even a star in the sky.

Until my next update,

Take care and

Blessings always

Sharon xx

Here on the Island of Bali, Indonesia, we are on standby.

The district around the mighty Mount Agung has been evacuated.

The Volcano alert has been lifted to level 4.

However, we really don’t know…?

I decided to ignore the news, ignore facebook posts and take a stroll to see what I could find out.

I found out on our walk from my husband Made, that locals around the area have spread the word via Facebook.

The word spread and locals decided to make significant offerings to try and appease the Gods, to offer their prayers to Mount Agung.

The offerings are a gift of gratitude to appease Mount Agung … if he decides to erupt, please be less dramatic than when he erupted and dominated our Idylic Island in 1963.

I will keep you all updated from the gossip of locals on my blog.

Oprah #anoprahmustreadstory

So much has happened since I posted this letter to Oprah in November last year.

Sharon Karyasa

Dear Oprah,

I guess the best way to write you a letter would be to put out a letter onto my blog and then pray you will read it.

I met a lovely man today in Ubud, Bali where I live who suggested I write you an open letter on my blog with a hashtag #anoprahmustreadstory.

Since my earliest memories I have heard voices and seen signs, since my earliest memories I have felt the need to rebel against constraints to live according to other people’s conventional expectations.

Todays meeting with this lovely man was a sign for me to write you a letter.

Oprah, I have written my memoir, which is recounted by my alter-ego Scarlett, my life has been five decades of adventure, intrigue, devastation, survival and miracles.

Oprah, this is a true story, this my story. My pray is for you to read my memoir, as…

Reflection

Some days we want to swing, laugh, embrace natures beauty and forget.

Some days the Universe sends messages of warnings that all is not as perfect as it seems in an idyllic illusion.

Do we keep swinging or do we take a leap?

Now is the time to Unite in love, it IS possible, nature is yearning for a brave new world.
