7 Days in LA

Okay so here’s the thing, I came to this town with really no idea what I was doing. I have a few friends and contacts, however I had no firm plan.

Two of my best friends asked me “What will be the first thing you do when you arrive LA”?. In which I answered, “Sleep”.

When I finally arrived at the location according to the Airbnb instructions, it was late, I had flown for 20 hours with a two hour transit in Taipei.

I was greeted at my new pad near Beverly Hills by a handsome guy who is a screen writer and musician. A few minutes later I met my flat mate Heather who is a Hollywood actress and stunt woman.

It was at this point, I became light headed, delirious, disoriented and giggly. And then my shadow voices kicked in;

“Go to bed Sharon”

“Think about what to do tomorrow”

“Just like Scarlett O’Hara says, tomorrow is another day”

So here I am one week later. So much has happened in such a short time, it’s been like a whirlwind really, navigating my way around LA with the taxi system Lyft. Connecting with my contacts. Travelling to the majestic Santa Barbara and organising catch up’s and possible leads.

My time in Los Angeles prestigious Riviera was captivating. My dear friend Ingrid was the perfect hostess chauffeuring me around the most exclusive locations and opening up astounding opportunities.

At one point in the day I thought I was actually on the set of a movie.

I feel as though I am making progress. When I am confused and feel a little lost, I pray. My daily ritual continues to calm my soul.

Tonight Heather has invited me to a Premiere in Hollywood. I am now back at my computer, too excited to sleep.

The buzz of being at the Premiere of The Handmaid’s Tale, such a dramatic controversial show has left me deep in thought.

I had the honour of meeting distinguished Author, Margaret Atwood, directly after I finish writing this blog I will be downloading this important book.

The American press are calling this series an important timely event as the provocative fantasy tale is all too scary to think about.

Imagine a world where woman’s rights have not only gone backwards in equality, the unthinkable extreme has happened.

Being in LA, it is clear that the political situation and attitudes towards women by the current government is not taken lightly. The Handmaid’s Tale Premiere tonight was frightening, confronting and thought provoking given my passion for equality and justice.

To lighten my mood I was pleasantly surprised when the Lyft driver turned up with a clean car and colgate smile. After a few minutes chatting to him I discovered  my new friend is a Producer and Film Maker.  I wonder what will transpire in the next 7 days.

Hollywoood Dreams

I am sitting in the transit lounge at the Taipei Airport.

My next stop is Los Angeles, am I dreaming?

It was only one week ago that I decided to embark on my journey to Hollywood in search of Oprah and securing a film deal for Scarlett Voices in the Shadows.

Even as I am writing this blog I feel a little crazy putting my thoughts down on paper, then I hear one of my shadow voices whispering words of encouragement not to hold back in sharing my dreams.

Actually, some incredible leads and miraculous connections have transpired this week following my decision to book a flight.

I have met and been encouraged by talented writers and artists, further fuelling my ambition to go all the way with Scarlett.

I met with a creative writer at the Ubud Authors Group who generously shared inspirational quotes about the power of belief, trust and magic. This conversation came at a timely moment, reinforcing my commitment that I had made the correct decision to go for gold in Hollywood.

For those of you who have read my memoir, you may recall previous visits to Los Angeles, every time has been memorable for totally different reasons.

So here goes, I am on my way to the land of dreams and fantasy.

I will keep you all updated of course.

Blessings always,

Sharon xxx

Doing Stuff

This little post will be about Doing Stuff, following on from a similar theme I wrote about in my article titled Shy girls end last.

Maybe you are wondering what I mean by stuff? Although the word stuff is not very creative, it kind of gets you thinking.

Okay, I will start again. I will phrase it another way. Have you ever thought about something you would love to do? however you don’t do it because you justify the reasons why not to, some of the excuses may have been;

“I don’t want to spend the money, I simply cannot afford it”

“My schedule is too busy to do that”

“What if the thing I am thinking of doing will cause me harm?”

“What if the plane crashes?”

“What if a terrorist attack happens?”

“I would have done that once, however I am now too old”

“I cant do that because my friends and family will think I am crazy”

Or you have made statements like this;

“Yes I have always wanted to do that, maybe I will, when I retire”

“My dream is to do that, but I am too old now”

“Wow, can you imagine doing that, oh no I could never do that”

“I absolutely dream of doing that, however I am afraid of failure”

Only recently I have been hearing these types of conversations more frequently.  I sat down and thought about it, then I came to the conclusion that it was because I am getting older.

It seems for many people as they become older their dreams seem to diminish, as they start to relax into the twilight years.

Then I started listening to conversations of young people and realised that these types of fears and attitudes do not happen because of generational reasons, these types of fears and attitudes are considered at all ages.

Next week I am embarking on another one of my crazy missions. I will be writing about it regularly on my blog.

Winding up my thoughts today though, I would like to leave you with a quote from my movie idol.

I am sure some my girlfriends love Richard Gere as much as I do. Who couldn’t resist his charm in an Office and a Gentleman and Pretty Woman?

My movie idol crush seems to have intensified as I leave you with this famous quote from the sexy man in his twilight years.

None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought. Eat the delicious food. Walk in the sunshine. Jump in the ocean. Say the truth that you’re carrying in your heart like hidden treasure. Be silly. Be kind. Be weird. There’s no time for anything else.”

Blessings always

Galungan dan Kuningan_April 2017

So much preparation goes into making elaborate offerings to appease the Gods and welcome the spiritual ancestors.

The spiritual ancestors descend on Bali and stay for 10 days before heading back on Kuningan Day.

This tradition happens every 210 days as detailed on the complicated Balinese calendar.

Living in a family compound amongst this pomp and ceremony can be confronting and intimidating.

Some of you who know me or have read my memoir will know that I began praying to the Bali Gods after a miracle happened to me in a temple.

My relationship with the Balinese Gods, Goddesses and Spirits has been intense, complicated and unexplainable just as the ancient rituals, but different.

Words cannot describe the profound effect the spirits have radiated through my soul since that miraculous day in 2010.

Maybe one day I will be able to articulate the radical transformation that has transpired in my soul, which started that day when I was rescued lovingly and embraced by a force so powerful I have not yet found a way to share with you in the written word.

I have decided this Galungan not to participate with my Village people, my Gods, Goddess and Spirits are whispering to me, instructing me to breathe and relax.

My family praying in our home temple

They are whispering to me, advising me to rest, pray and meditate while the Village people are busy throughout the spiritual vortex of this magical land.

They are saying it’s okay to read, write, sleep and love peacefully. It’s okay not to be participating in the traditional activities of the rhythmic machine and intricate processes.

May all of you who have taken the time to read my blog be blessed in abundance by your ancestors, may your life be touched with magic just as it has done with me.

Blessings always
